President & Founder
Wayne has over 35 years of diversified international and domestic experience in food retailing, procurement and distribution arenas. He is a results-orientated professional with a track record of success in a fast-paced, changing, and competitive environment. He is recognized for vision, leadership abilities and being at the front on industry innovation and design at all levels. Wayne has proven accomplishments of creating new business models and divisions that create scalable and sustainable stakeholder value both in his own retail stores and while holding senior or executive roles at Sobeys Inc or Wal-Mart Stores Inc. He received the Canadian Produce Man of the Year award in 1996 and the Ontario Produce Person of the Year award in 2002. He was also chairman of the CPMA in 2005 and has served as a director since 1990.
While receiving his Bachelor of Commerce degree from Mount Allison University, Wayne began his food career with Willett Foods (Div of Dominion Stores) in 1975 holding various positions in a great cross-section of the total organization. He built and ran his own, very successful, specialty retail stores from 1980 to 1986; turning customers to clients to advocates in a competitive retail environment. He sold the stores to Co-Op Atlantic where he also became Director of Produce Operations. After developing their procurement and distribution competencies, he took on another start-up role in 1998 when he moved to Toronto to become Director of National Procurement for Oshawa Foods and then Vice President of Produce & Floral for Sobeys Inc after the acquisition of Oshawa.
In 2004 he was lured to Bentonville, AR and started a new Division -Global Procurement Food- for Wal-Mart Stores. Wayne and his team developed and implemented a global food procurement and logistics model to support Wal-Mart’s rapidly expanding retail business units around the world. Strong relationship building with a diversified global supply base for food and beverages helped facilitate import and export business with strict ethical and compliance guidelines. GP offices are now located in strategic sourcing regions around the world and are well-positioned to help Wal-Mart grow for years to come.
Wayne has also lead many industry initiatives in technology, standards and generic promotion of fruit and vegetable consumption. He has been on the Board of PMA, PEIB and member of Food Foresight. He was Chairman of the Fresh For Flavour Foundation and CPMA. He is a strong advocate of sustainability, diversity and ethical practices.
Wayne started McKnight Insights & Solutions Inc in February 2008 to help guide a better engagement between buyers and sellers. With particular focus on returning more to the Land, improving communications, business planning and execution steps are key pillars to success of the stakeholders.
